Manchester Creative Studio: Listening Period Launched

The Trust Board for Manchester Creative Studio is launching a listening period to get your views on the school's future.

With the excellent support of The Laurus Trust, progress has been made in strengthening the school over the last six months. What has become increasingly clear, however, is that MCS does not have the capacity and resources to continue this trajectory over a sustained period of time. The school has significant financial challenges and the reality is that, without considerable support from outside bodies, it is unable to deliver on its educational aspirations.

After a great deal of discussion with the Department for Education and the ESFA, we have reached a point where it is right and correct that we stop and look at what the future holds for MCS. We are launching a listening period to get your views on this.

The option that is being strongly considered is that the school will close at the end of this academic year. This would mean that:

  • Pupils, all of whom are in years 11 or 13, will be supported to complete their courses through to the end of the year.
  • Support for the school would be provided throughout the year by the team from The Laurus Trust to ensure that pupils receive a good standard of education.
  • Pupils would be supported to progress to further or higher education or employment following completion of their courses.
  • The trust would work with staff to support them in transition to other roles.
  • The school would close to pupils in July 2018

If this option did become a reality, by starting this conversation now, it gives any young person looking to come to MCS in the future the time to explore other options and allows staff significant time to secure alternative employment for September.

Before making a final decision, however, we want to gather the views of everyone associated with the school's community.

Please complete the survey by clicking on the link below. Every comment will be read, discussed and debated.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Class of 2017 - GCSE Result Success!

We are incredibly proud of the GCSE class of 2017 who achieved great results, particularly given the national context of new examinations, more challenging thresholds, and a fall in the national figures.

MCS achieved the following standards in 2017:

·      63% of students with 'standard' passes of 4+ in English and Maths

·      24% at the new 'gold standard' of 5+ passes in English and Maths

·      An average grade of ‘4’ across all subjects using the Attainment 8 measure

Our aim now is to improve further on these results with our brand new Year 11 cohort who have started back with us this week – let the hard work start over again!

Important changes to the GCSE grading system

Over the past year, the Department for Education (DfE) has brought in a new system for grading GCSEs.  The new courses and exams have been designed by the DfE to ensure that young people have the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the 21st Century.

To support the public through the changes, the DfE has produced two piece of guidance – one for parents and the other for employers.  This guidance is now up on our website, and you can find them here:

Employers: https://www.mcstudio.co.uk/partner-companies

Enter the MCS Carnival of Horrors!

Welcome to the MCS Carnival of Horrors - a one-off exhibition with all work created by, and curated by our Year 13 Media (Games Design) & Media (Film & TV) students,

As this is a student led event and themes of horror lend themselves well to experimentation in media, they have chosen this as the theme – don’t worry if you’ve a faint heart though – it’s not too gory!

This is a great chance for the students to reflect on their brilliant work created over the past couple of years as well as provide a look ahead for them as they prepare to leave for university and employment this summer and all support is welcome.

You can just turn up on the night, but if possible, please register your attendance here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mcs-carnival-of-horrors-exhibition-tickets-34027311605

We hope to see you there!

You can find the timetable here – where there are two sessions running concurrently, students will be asked to split their time evenly.

These sessions are a great for your child to keep up their momentum ahead of the final term of the year and we hope to see them here!
